I grew up in Portland, Oregon and have had a new pet interest for
every season of every year as far back as I can remember. One August
when I was probably five or six years old my dad surprised me with a
camping trip during the Perseid Meteor Shower, and I've been in love
with the nature ever since. I like to blame the impression that that
childhood wonder left on me for the fact that some of my best recent
memories are of bicycle touring across the Northwest and tromping
around the Oregon wilderness.
Gradually, writing began to stand out as something else that I really
loved and this spring I graduated from Southern Oregon University with
a degree in English Literature and a minor in biology. In the fall of
2010 I attended an amazing study abroad program in mainland Ecuador
and the Galapagos Islands. It was during this time that I met Jeremy
Hance of Mongabay on a trip to the Tiputini Biodiversity Station in
the Ecuadorian Amazon and first asked if I could write something for
the website.
I am currently living in Portland again, working as a server at a
hotel and saving money for a journey to South America, where I hope to
improve my Spanish and try my hand at teaching.
